GLASGOW SOLDIER CONVICTED OF DOMESTIC ABUSE RETURNS TO ACTIVE DUTY
Dean Forsyth, a serving member of the Black Watch regiment based at Fort George, Inverness, and residing in Motherwell, has been convicted in connection with domestic abuse offences. In December 2020, Forsyth was found guilty of domestic assault following a court case that lasted almost two years.
More recently, in a separate case relating to historical abuse, he pled guilty to one count of threatening and abusive behaviour as part of a plea agreement.
Despite the convictions, Forsyth has continued to serve in the British Army, a decision which has drawn criticism from members of the public and domestic abuse survivors.
The victim, who bravely came forward after years of abuse, credited Women’s Aid and the Domestic Abuse Division of Police Scotland for their support.
She urged other women to use the Domestic Abuse Disclosure Scheme (also known as Clare’s Law) to check whether a partner has a history of violence.
This case serves as another reminder that domestic abuse can be perpetrated by individuals in positions of trust and authority — and that convictions do not always result in removal from public service.
