DAVID SUTER FROM WELWYN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN ST ALBANS
In October 2021, a man from Welwyn, David Suter, was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to serious historic child sex offences. The 74-year-old resident of Glebe Road appeared before St Albans Crown Court on a Monday, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
The court proceedings revealed that the abuse occurred within the Welwyn area over a period spanning from 2004 to 2008. During this time, Suter reportedly offered money to the young victim in exchange for sexual acts, exploiting her vulnerability and trust.
The victim, now in her 30s, was described as having a difficult upbringing, which contributed to her vulnerability at the time of the abuse. The impact of Suter’s actions has had a lasting effect on her mental health, according to Det Con Liz McGrath from the Hertfordshire Historic Child Abuse Investigation Unit.
It was only in 2019 that she felt able to disclose the details of her ordeal to the police, leading to Suter’s arrest. Subsequently, in January 2021, he was formally charged with the offences.
As part of his sentence, Suter is required to adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next 20 years. Additionally, he will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions related to his conduct.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance and the long-lasting consequences of child abuse, with authorities emphasizing the need for victims to come forward and seek justice.
