NORTH SHIELDS MAN JAILED FOR STALKING, ABUSE, AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE
David Smith, of Brandling Court, North Shields, has been convicted and sentenced for a sustained campaign of abuse, stalking, and sexual violence against Louise Sutherland-Knowles.The court heard that Smith began his abusive behavior shortly after their relationship, which started in 2018, and continued through to their separation in 2022.
During their relationship, he used threats, manipulation, and control tactics, demanding to go through her phone, monitoring her communications, and alienating her from her friends.
Despite her efforts to leave over 30 times, he manipulated his way back into her life, often by appearing unexpectedly or threatening self-harm or job loss.
After their breakup, Smith continued to harass Louise via messages, calls, and by showing up at her home and workplace, with escalating violence including climbing into her garden with a knife, breaking into her home, and physically assaulting her.
The police investigation led to Smith being charged with multiple offenses, including stalking, sexual assault, criminal damage, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to four years in prison at Newcastle Crown Court, with an additional three years on license.
Police officials praised Louise for her bravery in reporting the abuse, which ultimately led to Smith’s conviction, and emphasized the importance of safeguarding victims of domestic abuse.
Smith’s behavior and the legal proceedings highlight the seriousness of domestic stalking and abuse, and the court’s decision aims to protect Louise and her children from further harm.
