2000: WORCESTER MAN JAILED FOR INDECENT ASSAULTS ON GIRL
A man who committed a sexual offence against an eight-year-old girl has been sentenced to two years in prison. At Worcester Crown Court, it was disclosed that David Powell offered money to the girl to touch him after he partly unfastened his trousers.
The accused, aged 30, admitted to two counts of indecent assault.
He was also instructed to register as a sex offender for ten years and to attend a rehabilitation scheme after serving his sentence.
Prosecutor Tariq Shakoor explained that Powell behaved indecently in front of various children at a home in Kidderminster.
No allegations were made that he physically assaulted or molested the young girl.
The case was brought to light after the girl’s friend told her mother about Powell’s inappropriate conduct.
Other children between the ages of seven and ten also disclosed similar experiences to the police.
Defense attorney Carol Knotts stated that Powell from Wassell Drive, Wribbenhall, Bewdley, felt shame and disgust about his actions.
She added that his family is extremely important to him and he is distressed about the potential loss of their unity.
Judge Marten Coates said Powell’s guilty pleas related to conduct on four or five occasions over a period of three months in 1999.
