DAVID MURRAY FROM CAERAU NEAR BRIDGEND AND KILKENNY: HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL REVEALS IRISH PAEDOPHILE LIVING NEAR SCHOOLS

In a disturbing revelation, it has emerged that David Murray, a notorious child sex offender with a long history of abuse, has been secretly residing in Caerau, near Bridgend, Wales, for at least nine months. His new home is situated on a quiet residential street, directly adjacent to a family with a 10-year-old boy, who remains unaware of Murray’s dark past. This unsettling discovery raises serious concerns about community safety and the adequacy of background checks for individuals with such a heinous criminal record.

David Murray, aged 63, is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most infamous sex offenders. His criminal history is extensive and deeply disturbing, involving the sexual abuse of orphans and foster children over a span of more than two decades. His crimes first came to public attention in the late 1990s, but recent reports indicate that he has managed to evade detection while living in Wales, close to young children and within yards of two local schools.

Originally from Balbriggan, County Dublin, Murray’s criminal activities date back to the 1970s when he worked as a childcare worker at St Joseph’s Orphanage in Kilkenny, operated by the Sisters of Charity. During his tenure there from 1971 to 1976, he was entrusted with the care of vulnerable children, many of whom he later sexually abused. Among his victims were two brothers, whom he fostered after moving to Cork. The abuse of these boys began five years after they were fostered by Murray, when they were approximately 10 and 12 years old.

In December 1997, Murray was convicted by Judge Joseph Mathews in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for a series of heinous crimes. The court heard that he had sexually assaulted ten boys at St Joseph’s Orphanage, and that he had fostered the two brothers involved in the abuse. The judge described Murray as “an obsessive, compulsive, fixated paedophile with a deep-rooted, twisted sexuality,” and remarked that perhaps no other childcare worker in Ireland’s history had caused such extensive damage over such a prolonged period.

His criminal record includes a 10-year prison sentence served at the Curragh Prison, with some of his sentences running concurrently. Murray pleaded not guilty to 271 charges of sexual abuse but changed his plea to guilty on 34 sample charges during his trial. In May 2001, he was convicted of further sexual offences against a boy in Lusk, County Dublin. His criminal activities also involved fondling children during trips to the cinema, hospital stays, camping excursions, and even in their beds at the orphanage. He would sometimes cover their laps with a jacket before slipping his hand underneath, and in some cases, he forced the boys to perform sexual acts on him while he watched or recorded the abuse on video.

Murray’s threats to silence his victims were particularly chilling; he warned that if they spoke out, he would unleash his Alsatian dog, Thunder, or kill and bury them in a vegetable plot. His actions left a trail of trauma and suffering among his victims, many of whom have since spoken out about the abuse they endured. The nuns who managed the orphanage have publicly apologized, expressing shame, shock, and horror at the extent of the abuse committed under their watch.

After serving his sentence, Murray was released from prison in 2007. Instead of returning to Ireland, he chose to leave the country altogether. It was only recently that he moved to Caerau, near Bridgend, where he now lives in apparent anonymity. His neighbors, including a family with a young boy, remain unaware of his past crimes. The community’s safety concerns have been heightened by the fact that Murray’s criminal history was not publicly known until recent investigations uncovered his background during a routine check.

Authorities and community members are now grappling with the implications of his presence in the neighborhood. The case underscores the importance of thorough background checks and community vigilance to prevent individuals with such a history from living undetected near vulnerable populations. The local authorities have been urged to review their procedures to ensure that such dangerous individuals are not able to re-establish themselves in safe, unsuspecting communities.
