DUBLIN OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR HEINOUS SEXUAL ASSAULT
A convicted sex offender, David Mullen, 29, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the assault of a caretaker woman in Dun Laoghaire, South Dublin. The incident involved a depraved attack that lasted from 2am to 4.30am, during which Mullen subjected the woman to a heinous ordeal.
After the assault, he publicly admitted to the rape, apologized, and even offered to walk her home, displaying a disturbing lack of remorse.
The victim, a woman in her 20s, was traumatized by the experience, which the judge described as reaching 'new depths of depravity.' Mullen was identified shortly after the attack by authorities, who found him at a taxi rank with dirt on his hands.
A subsequent drugs search was negative, and he was arrested three minutes after his release, following his admission of guilt on multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, theft of a credit card, and making threats against the woman.
The court sentenced him to two 15-year jail terms for rape and sexual assault, with additional sentences for other sex-related acts.
Portions of his sentences were suspended due to his cooperation with police, and he was placed on the sex offenders' register with a ten-year supervision requirement.
The court also heard a written apology from Mullen, who claimed to be mildly mentally ill.
