2008: MAN JAILED FOR ATTACKING EX-PARTNER
A man who assaulted and issued threats to his former partner while on bail for an unrelated burglary was sentenced today to two-and-a-half years in prison.During a series of harassment incidents, David Else struck Sharon McGarrigan on her head and shoulder, and on another occasion, entered her home armed with a knife, cutting her curtains.
He also shouted abusive language and threateningly promised to burn her house down at different times, the court heard, as presented by prosecutor Alan Bakker.
The 41-year-old, residing on Glebe Street in Leigh, pleaded guilty to charges of harassment and two burglaries.
According to Mr Bakker, on November 3 of the previous year, Else broke into a residence on Barn Lane, Golborne, aiming to steal.
Just over two weeks later, on November 15, he and others burgled the Zafar Indian takeaway on High Street, Golborne, stealing around £1,000 worth of items, including 10 kilograms of meat, soft drinks, and electronic devices.
Else was arrested for the first burglary on December 4 but continued his harassment campaign between May 11 and 13 this year while on bail.
Defense solicitor Geoffrey Whelan explained that Else, with a history of dishonesty-related convictions, has long struggled with drug addiction.
At the time of the initial burglary, he was living with his 15-year-old son and was unable to support himself, his son, and his drug habit, which contributed to his offending.
The harassment was also driven by his upset over his ex-girlfriend's new relationship.
Whelan emphasized that although this was not a justification, Else felt betrayed and reacted inappropriately over several days.
"He shows remorse and regret," he concluded.
