MAN JAILED FOR 10 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER
David Cairney, aged 35, pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman in Elgin during February 2022.When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they found Cairney seated atop the unconscious woman, engaging in repeated punches.
He was forcibly removed from the scene.
The High Court in Dundee sentenced Cairney to an extended term of 13.5 years, with 10 years and six months to be served before he is subject to supervised release.
During the attack, Cairney also used a skateboard to strike his victim.
As a result of the attack, the woman sustained multiple injuries on her face and neck and is expected to face long-term physical impairments.
An order was issued to prohibit Cairney from contacting or attempting to contact the victim indefinitely.
Moira Orr, who leads on homicide and major crime for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, said: "David Cairney showed a callous disregard for the safety and wellbeing of his then partner."
