DAVID BENNETT FROM WESTCLIFF SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR ONLINE SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING UNDERAGE VICTIM

In a case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the persistent threat posed by individuals with a history of sexual offenses, David Bennett, aged 34, of Albion Road in Westcliff, was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison following his conviction for multiple serious sexual offences.

The incident came to light during an undercover police operation, where Bennett was caught engaging in inappropriate online communication with an officer posing as a 12-year-old girl. The court proceedings revealed that Bennett’s offending began on March 17, when the police officer initiated contact, pretending to be a young girl. Over the course of ten days, Bennett engaged in grooming behavior through online chat rooms and social media platforms, attempting to manipulate the officer into sexual activity.

Prosecutor Gareth Hughes detailed the disturbing nature of Bennett’s actions, stating, “This offending started on March 17 with a police officer playing the role of a 12-year-old girl and in a 10 day period she was groomed by the defendant using online chat rooms and social media.” He explained that Bennett falsely claimed to be 16, later asserting he was 28, despite his actual age of 34. Throughout their interactions, Bennett inquired about the simulated victim’s sexual experiences and relationships, and repeatedly asked for explicit images of her. In return, he sent explicit images of himself, further demonstrating his predatory intent.

It was also revealed that Bennett had been released from prison in 2019 and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order. This order mandated that he inform police if he used social media, underscoring the ongoing concern about his potential to reoffend. Bennett’s criminal record includes convictions for attempted rape of a child, indecent assault of a child, and possession of indecent images of children, all of which paint a troubling picture of his history and the risks he poses.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Andrew Hurst addressed Bennett directly, emphasizing the deeply ingrained nature of his offending. “This offending shows it’s an entrenched part of your psychological makeup,” the judge stated. He warned that if Bennett were to reoffend with a real child, the consequences could be devastating, as children are ill-equipped to handle such adult sexual behavior. The judge’s comments underscored the seriousness of the case and the potential harm Bennett could cause if given the opportunity to reoffend.

Ultimately, Bennett was sentenced to seven years in prison. Additionally, upon his release, he will be subject to a further seven years on licence, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions aimed at protecting the public from his predatory behavior.
