TWO MEN JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
Two men received a combined prison sentence of 21 years after confessing to crimes involving the sexual exploitation of minors. The case was investigated by the Internet Child Abuse Team (ICAT), which started its inquiry in July 2024 after discovering indecent images of children being shared online.
The images were traced back to Gary Mellor, who was residing in Southampton at the time.
Mellor was taken into custody at his home in September 2024, and his mobile device was confiscated.
Forensic analysis of the phone uncovered numerous indecent images of children, including those created by Mellor himself.
Authorities also found disturbing online chats between Mellor and Darren Mabey, where they discussed abusing children.
During court proceedings, these conversations, which included plans to meet at local leisure centers like The Rapids in Romsey and to exchange children, were read aloud.
This evidence enabled police to locate and arrest Mabey, also living in Southampton, in November 2024.
During his arrest, authorities seized ten digital devices from Mabey, revealing further messages about child exploitation and additional indecent images.
At Southampton Crown Court, Mellor admitted to creating indecent images of children across various categories and to arranging or facilitating the sexual abuse of a child under 13.
Mabey pleaded guilty to producing a Category A indecent image, aiding in the exploitation of a child under 13, possessing an offensive weapon in private, and possessing a Class B drug.
On 14 July, both appeared for sentencing: Mellor, aged 43 from Castle Street, Salisbury, was sentenced to 10 years in prison; Mabey, aged 33 from Brighton Road, Lewes, was sentenced to 11 years.
They will also be subject to indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Orders and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
