SCOTTISH MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER FOR VIOLENTLY CHOKING KENYAN WIFE
A Scottish man named Walter Buchanan, aged 66, has been convicted of murdering his Kenyan wife, Darrel Buchanan, following a domestic dispute centered around alleged infidelity. The incident occurred at their upscale apartment near Hamilton racecourse on February 18, 2023.
During the attack, Buchanan violently strangled Darrel, resulting in her suffering significant neck compression, a brain injury, contusions, and a broken rib, as determined by an autopsy.
Despite maintaining his innocence by claiming the act was in self-defense, the jury found him guilty after reviewing extensive evidence of ongoing abuse Darrel had suffered throughout their unstable marriage.
The court learned that the couple met in Thailand in 2015 and married two years later.
Darrel had reportedly spoken to neighbors about her domestic abuse, including having her passport taken and experiencing physical violence behind closed doors.
The police and court presentations detailed Buchanan's infatuation with his wife, his presence out with friends the night before, and allegations of her unhappiness and claims that he was happier with others.
Buchanan's defense described a struggle where he claimed she lunged at him, he responded by grabbing her hair and falling, after which she left the room.
He also admitted to pushing her into a pillow and defending himself when she became aggressive.
The High Court in Glasgow convicted Buchanan, and he is scheduled for sentencing next month.
The case underscores the ongoing issues of domestic abuse, with police emphasizing their commitment to tackling such violence and supporting victims.
