BASILDON MAN ADMITS BONNYGATE RAPE OF UNCONSCIOUS WOMAN
A man raped an unconscious woman in broad daylight in a Basildon street, he has confessed.Daniel Ryan, 38, of Goldhanger Cross, attacked the woman in Bonnygate on Sunday, August 31.
Police were called to the scene at around 4pm that day and he was arrested.
He pleaded guilty to a single count of rape at Basildon Crown Court on Friday (October 24).
The Echo can now reveal details of the case which were previously unreportable, in case they prejudiced jurors in Ryan’s potential future trial.
In September, Ryan requested release on bail.
At that hearing, prosecutor Harry Hewett said the Crown Prosecution Service opposed bail due to the risk of further offences and witness interference.
He told Recorder Ben Irwin, sitting as a judge at Basildon Crown Court, that the attack was a stranger rape and had been caught on a Ring doorbell camera.
“The member of the public who owns the doorbell sees the complainant unconscious on the floor in the nearby area and the defendant on top of her,” said Mr Hewett.
“He gets up and walks away, comes back and paces up and down and then, a short while later, he is laying on top of her.” At that time, said Mr Hewett, Ryan “appears to have his trousers pulled halfway down.
The complainant’s trousers are also partially down.” More sexual acts are performed by Ryan, he said, while the victim “remains motionless”.
“I think, in light of the evidence, which was strong, it was a sensible decision - but you will be afforded a significant amount of credit for your plea,” Judge Conley told him.
In the meantime, he will remain in custody.
His sentencing was scheduled for January.
There, he will likely receive a 25% reduction in his sentence as a reward for pleading guilty.
The attack was caught on a Ring doorbell camera, showing the victim unconscious and Ryan on top of her during the assault.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- BASILDON RAPIST CAUGHT ON RING DOORBELL JAILED FOR SIX YEARS A Basildon man has been jailed for almost seven years for raping an unconscious woman in broad daylight, after the attack was caught on a resident’s Ring doorbell camera.
Daniel Ryan, 38, of Goldhanger Cross, was filmed abusing the woman in Bonnygate.
He had met her earlier that day, gone with her to the Big Q shops in Whitmore Way and shared wine and cigarettes with her.
But when she fell unconscious, said Recorder Emma Nash, Ryan “took advantage of her in the most serious way”.
The attack occurred at 4pm on Sunday, August 31.
Throughout the filmed incident, said prosecutor John Oliver, “There was no reaction at all from her.
She remains motionless.” The woman remained unconscious when police arrived to arrest Ryan and only regained consciousness when taken to hospital, where the prosecutor described her as “emotional, confused [and] frightened”.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman said her sleep had been disturbed ever since the attack and she had become “a recluse”, frightened of going out alone and suffering panic attacks if men sat next to her on public transport.
Basildon Crown Court heard on Thursday (February 5) that Ryan had 22 prior convictions for offences including burglary and theft, but none were for sexual offences.
Police had intelligence linking him to alleged domestic violence but he had never been convicted.
“He did feel a deep sense of shame,” said defence barrister Simone Newton.
“He was truly disgusted with himself… He does understand the devastating impact that she has described.” But Recorder Nash said she was unable to accept Ryan felt any genuine remorse for his actions, as he had initially sought to deny the offence.
Confronted with the video footage, and after his semen was found inside the victim’s body, he pleaded guilty to rape.
Recorder Nash sentenced him to six years and nine months in prison.
