COLCHESTER MAN WHO KICKED PREGNANT WOMAN AVOIDS JAIL
A man wrote to a judge, proclaiming he would never intentionally hurt a woman – despite having been found guilty of kicking his pregnant partner in the stomach before that same judge weeks earlier.Daniel Muzumara appeared in the dock at Ipswich Crown Court before Recorder Nicola Williams on Monday.
The 35-year-old had admitted one count of assault by beating, and was found guilty by a jury of several other offences committed against the same woman.
These included a second count of assault by beating, damaging property (tear the woman’s top), and intimidating the woman by telling her he would kill her if she continued with the charges.
Muzumara, of Cambie Crescent, Colchester, was also found not guilty of one count of intentional strangulation.
The court heard that Muzumara had pushed the woman to the ground and kicked her in the stomach, knowing she was pregnant with his child.
During the trial, the court heard that Muzumara had also written to Recorder Williams ahead of his sentencing, claiming he had the “utmost respect” for women and would “never hurt a partner intentionally”.
Recorder Williams stated she did not appreciate being “lied” to and questioned whether he forgot who he was writing to.
Despite describing his offending as “vile”, Recorder Williams decided against jail and instead awarded the victim £500 in compensation, banning Muzumara from contacting her for 10 years, and requiring him to undertake 250 hours of unpaid work, up to 15 rehabilitation days, and 26 sessions of a course on “building choices”.
He was sentenced to 20 months, suspended for two years, for the lead offence of witness intimidation.
Recorder Williams advised him to examine any issues he might have with women.
