MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR CHOKING PARTNER IN SWANSEA
A woman experienced severe distress during an assault when her partner, Daniel Gibson, squeezed her throat until she thought her head would 'explode'.The incident occurred after Gibson lost his temper because the woman's child was crying with teething pain.
Court reports reveal Gibson had previously lost his temper on a series of occasions, with a 'disturbing offending history' involving 20 previous convictions for 36 offences, including assaults, breaches of restraining orders, threats to kill and arson, criminal damage, public disorder, and resisting police.
The assault happened in November last year, but the woman only reported it in October this year, when she made multiple disclosures to the police.
Gibson had pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation and was sentenced to 20 months in prison after the judge, Huw Rees, described his offending history as 'disturbing' and voiced concern about him being a risk to current and former partners.
Gibson remains in a relationship with the woman, who is now nine weeks pregnant, and they are expecting a child.
The judge also noted Gibson's presence in court via videolink from prison, his guilty plea, and the absence of any alternative to immediate custody.
Gibson's advocate expressed disappointment at the sentence, stating he believed Gibson was making progress and gaining 'insight'.
The court emphasized that the assault was serious, involving throttling that made the victim feel like her head would explode, and came after Gibson's temper flare-up.
The victim did not lose consciousness but described the experience as extremely distressing.
