SAVAGE TYNESIDE SON THREW BOILING SALTY WATER OVER DAD AFTER PUTTING TURPS IN MUM'S WINE
A violent individual who previously contaminated his mother’s wine with turpentine and attacked both his grandmother and stepfather has been sentenced to prison for pouring boiling salted water over his father.Daniel Gaunt, who has a troubling record of assaulting family members, caused burns to his father’s neck and upper chest during his latest act of violence.
In September last year, Gaunt, who has no fixed address but was formerly from South Tyneside, argued with his father at his grandmother’s house.
After a period of cooling off, he retaliated by boiling water with a substantial amount of salt to cause more harm.
He then went outdoors and threw the scalding salted water onto his father in front of his grandmother.
The father was taken to the hospital with superficial burns on his neck and chest.
At 22 years old, Gaunt has amassed 26 prior convictions, including violent offenses.
His criminal history includes an assault on his stepfather with a screwdriver in 2021; in 2024, he was convicted of poisoning his mother by putting turpentine in her wine and threatening to set her house on fire; and in 2025, he assaulted his grandmother by grasping her neck and making threats.
He was convicted of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and sentenced to four and a half years in prison, with an additional four and a half years on extended license, as the judge deemed him a dangerous offender.
A ten-year restraining order was also issued to prevent him from contacting his grandmother.
Judge Sarah Mallett commented that Gaunt repeatedly targeted close family members and poses a serious threat due to the potential for severe harm.
The court noted that Gaunt suffers from mental health issues, and his family reported being fearful of his behavior when affected by substances.
Detective Sergeant Daniel Ross remarked that Gaunt deliberately planned his actions to cause maximum injury and highlighted his dangerous nature.
