CRAIG BARTLETT SENTENCED IN NEWBURY AND READING FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SIX-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In a case that has shocked the communities of Newbury and Reading, a young man named Craig Bartlett has been handed a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl. The incident took place in the girl's bedroom, a deeply disturbing violation that has left a lasting impact on the victim and her family.

Craig Bartlett, aged 19, was originally from Reading but was last residing at St Petroc Hostel located in Newtown Road, Newbury. His arrest and subsequent trial drew significant attention from local residents and authorities alike. Bartlett maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, denying the charges brought against him. However, after a trial at Reading Crown Court in November of the previous year, a jury found him guilty of the serious offense.

The sentencing occurred yesterday, with the court emphasizing the gravity of Bartlett's actions. As part of his punishment, he will serve a prison term of four years and will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses.

Victoria Griffiths, a lawyer representing the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), provided details about the case. She explained that Bartlett's assault on the young girl took place in July 2009. The case was particularly challenging to prosecute due to the victim's age and the sensitive nature of the crime. To protect her identity and reduce trauma, the court used special measures, including a DVD interview of the victim, which was played in court. The young girl was able to answer questions from both the prosecution and defense teams via a live TV link from another room, ensuring her safety and comfort during the proceedings.

Griffiths highlighted the importance of the case, stating, “This was an extremely serious offence which Bartlett denied, meaning that the six-year-old victim had to face the experience of giving evidence at the trial at Reading Crown Court. This outcome confirms the importance of bringing difficult cases to court. The CPS will vigorously prosecute offenders who target young and vulnerable victims.”

She also commended the efforts of Child Protection Officers involved in the case, praising their dedication and professionalism in gathering evidence and supporting the victim and her family throughout the judicial process.
