COLIN YOUNG OF WALLSEND SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SICKENING SEXUAL ABUSE CASES
In a case that has shocked the community of Wallsend and the surrounding areas, Colin Young has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses involving young girls.The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned several decades, beginning in the early 1980s and culminating in recent years.
During the sentencing, prosecutors detailed the extent of Young’s crimes, which included indecent assaults on two young girls.
Young, aged 58 and residing on Abercorn Place in Wallsend, showed no visible emotion as the court read out the horrifying details of his actions.
His victims ranged in age, with one girl now in her 30s, and another who was just eight years old at the time of the abuse.
The offences included indecency and assault of children under the age of 13.
The case came to light after the second victim, a nine-year-old girl, confided in her family in February 2010.
Her mother, who is legally protected from being named, submitted a victim impact statement to the court.
In her statement, she described how Young’s actions had devastated her family and how her daughter’s behavior at school had become increasingly uncontrollable.
The trauma inflicted by Young’s abuse had long-lasting effects, and her mother expressed her determination to support her daughter’s recovery.
Further investigations revealed that Young’s criminal conduct dated back to the early 1980s, when he was accused of touching a girl who is now in her 30s.
The most recent allegations involved multiple indecent assaults on an eight-year-old girl in 2009.
The severity and duration of his offending prompted the authorities to take stringent action.
Probation reports described Young as a man of previously good character, but also identified him as a “high risk of serious harm to children.” His defense lawyer, Caroline Goodwin, argued that the “harrowing offences” had a traumatic impact on Young himself, noting that he had been cut off from his family since his arrest and would likely struggle to cope with imprisonment.
However, Judge Guy Whitburn was unyielding in his sentencing.
Recognizing the gravity of Young’s crimes and the danger he posed, the judge extended the original six-year sentence to a full ten years.
He emphasized that Young’s secret life had been hidden from those who trusted him and described him as a “very dangerous man.” The judge also ordered that Young be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
As Young begins his prison term, the mother of one of his victims expressed her relief that justice had been served.
She stated, “We’re just relieved it’s over.
Now I want to look forward to the future and help my daughter through this.
Obviously what’s happened is horrendous and it’s going to take a long time for my daughter to get over this.
I aim to do everything in my power to help her forget it and move on.”
