COLIN MILLER FROM TOTTENHAM AND WOOD GREEN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Tottenham and Wood Green, Colin Miller, aged 29, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the heinous sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl. The disturbing incidents took place over a span of several months, from March to September 2005, during which Miller repeatedly subjected the young girl to sexual abuse. It was revealed during the trial at Wood Green Crown Court that Miller, who was known to have no fixed address at the time, would often target the vulnerable child in a house located in Tottenham, where she used to stay before attending church the following day.Details of the abuse emerged from a heartfelt and detailed letter written by the girl to her mother. In her letter, she recounted how Miller would wake her in the middle of the night and attempt to initiate sexual acts. She described her initial confusion, thinking it was a goodnight kiss, only to realize it was something far more sinister. The girl wrote, “I woke up and he told me to kiss him. I thought it was strange but I took it as a good night kiss. It was no good night kiss. I felt his tongue on my lips so I backed away. He took off my knickers and when I asked him what he was doing he just said shush. And then he opened my legs and had sex with me. And that’s how it happened every time until it stopped.”
Despite enduring this trauma, the girl did not disclose the abuse until 2007. Her silence was broken after her mother sent her to live in Jamaica with her father and aunts, where she felt “safe.” However, her emotional well-being continued to deteriorate, as she began to self-harm and appeared persistently unhappy. An aunt, noticing her distress, questioned her, which led to her revealing the abuse she had suffered at the hands of Miller.
Following her confession, her mother insisted she return to the UK in February of the following year. Fearing for her safety, the girl confided in a staff member at Gatwick Airport about the abuse. This crucial information prompted the police to launch an investigation. The authorities took her statement seriously, and a manhunt was initiated for Miller, who had fled the scene. Miller’s whereabouts became the subject of extensive media appeals, including features on the Haringey Independent and BBC’s Crimewatch, where he was described as a dangerous fugitive.
It was not until July of the previous year that Miller was finally located and arrested. He faced multiple charges, including five counts of rape. During the court proceedings, Miller was handed an indeterminate sentence, which requires him to apply for parole after serving a minimum of seven years. The judge emphasized the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision.
Detective Inspector Noel McHugh, who led the investigation and the subsequent manhunt, expressed his commitment to pursuing justice. He stated, “Miller’s conviction demonstrates our total commitment to all allegations of serious sexual assault no matter how long ago the offence was committed. A successful conviction was achieved through the courage and bravery of the young victim and an exceptional investigation carried out by officers from Haringey Child Abuse Investigation Team. I would also like to thank the media and the public for their support and assistance in capturing Miller. I hope Miller’s conviction can go some way in assisting the victim in moving forward with her life.”
In addition to his conviction for the sexual assaults, Miller also admitted to failing to comply with the Sex Offenders Register on 5 February 2009, further highlighting his ongoing criminal behavior. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring perpetrators of such grave crimes to justice, especially when the victims are as young and vulnerable as the girl in this case.
