COLIN GOODWIN SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR RAPE IN HEANOR AND NOTTINGHAM

In a significant case that has resonated deeply within the community of Heanor and the wider Nottingham area, Colin Roy Goodwin, aged 66, was handed a prison sentence of 14 years after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses. The conviction followed a trial at Nottingham Crown Court, where Goodwin was found guilty of seven counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault on a female. The crimes spanned several years, with the primary victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, having been assaulted between the ages of 11 and 17.

Additionally, another woman, also a teenager at the time, was attacked by Goodwin, further highlighting the extent of his predatory behavior. Despite maintaining his innocence and pleading not guilty to all charges, the jury found sufficient evidence to convict him on the majority of counts. However, he was acquitted on two additional counts of indecent assault, indicating that the court did not find enough evidence to support those particular allegations.

Goodwin’s residence on Ilkeston Road in Heanor was noted during the proceedings, and his case has sparked conversations about the importance of reporting abuse. The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, confided in her sister on Boxing Day in 2009, many years after the assaults occurred. Her family has since spoken out publicly, urging others who have suffered similar abuse to come forward and seek justice. They emphasized the importance of believing victims and providing support.

The victim’s husband and sister reached out to the Ripley and Heanor News to share their perspective and to encourage others to break the silence surrounding abuse. Her sister recounted that her sibling was told it was her fault and that no one would believe her, which contributed to her silence for many years. The husband expressed his frustration with Goodwin’s lack of remorse, noting that he refused to give evidence and could not remember key details such as names or dates. He described Goodwin as a “pervert” and expressed that, although the 14-year sentence is significant, it still feels insufficient given the gravity of the crimes.

He also revealed that his wife is about to begin counseling to help her cope with the trauma. While she feels relief that justice has been served, her husband admitted that the emotional impact of the case continues to linger. “She’s relieved at the verdict. She knows he has been found guilty – but it hasn’t sunk in 100 percent. It’s not really over for her and I don’t think it ever will be,” he said.

In a heartfelt statement, the family thanked the police officers and their team for their support and dedication throughout the investigation and trial. They also issued a plea to others who may be suffering in silence, urging victims to speak out, assuring them that they will be believed and helped. The case was formally sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, May 13, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims involved.
