A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering his 11-year-old son.
On June 18, Mikey Harrison was located by emergency personnel along Thorpes Road near Shipley Country Park in Heanor, Derbyshire, where he was pronounced dead later that day.
Initially, Michael Harrison, aged 41 from Nottingham’s Eaton Terrace, claimed his son had fallen from a tree.
However, he later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and then admitted to murder earlier this year.
During proceedings at Derby Crown Court, Harrison was given a minimum term of 21 years and six months.
Evidence presented indicated that Mikey’s injuries did not stem from a fall; instead, they were caused during an assault four hours prior to the emergency response.
Harrison reportedly placed his son into his van before driving him to the park.
A medical expert explained that if prompt medical attention had been provided, Mikey might have survived the internal injuries.
The court was told that Harrison panicked, threw a chair, and then physically attacked his son — punching him and smashing his head against a table.
The post-mortem report showed that Mikey suffered serious liver lacerations as well as multiple blunt force injuries across various parts of his body.
Prosecutors also stated that Harrison had deliberately stripped their rental property in Heanor to remove any evidence of the crime.
