COLIN GILES FROM DIDCOT ESCAPES PRISON AFTER SHARING CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Colin Giles, a 64-year-old resident of Usk Way in Didcot, was found guilty of possessing and distributing indecent images of children, as well as possessing videos of extreme pornography. The incident dates back to late 2011, with Giles admitting to engaging in illicit exchanges via his mobile phone after communicating with other adults through the online dating channel Rabbit TV.

Between October 1, 2011, and December 16, 2011, Giles was involved in sending and receiving a total of six indecent images of children. The prosecution, led by Terrence Woods, clarified that the majority of these images were classified as the lowest level of seriousness, known as level one. However, the case took a more disturbing turn when, on December 17, 2011, Giles sent a highly serious image, classified as level five, which depicted severe child abuse. This particular image was sent to a woman with whom Giles had been chatting on Rabbit TV.

The woman, upon viewing the image, was reportedly shocked and immediately contacted law enforcement authorities. Following her report, police conducted a raid on Giles’ residence and uncovered additional evidence. During the search, officers discovered videos containing extreme pornography, along with more photographs stored on Giles’ phone. Giles also admitted to possessing two counts of indecent images and two counts of extreme pornography, further implicating him in these criminal activities.

Throughout the proceedings, Claire Fraser, representing Giles, argued that her client did not see himself as a paedophile and was unaware that the content of the videos and images was illegal. She emphasized that Giles did not recognize the severity of his actions at the time.

Judge Tom Corrie, presiding over the case, acknowledged that this was Giles’ first offense. Recognizing the importance of addressing the underlying issues, the judge stated that it was more beneficial for Giles to undergo treatment for his “distorted” behavior rather than face immediate imprisonment. Consequently, Giles was sentenced to 20 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years. Additionally, Giles was subjected to a supervision order and an activity requirement aimed at helping him address and modify his behavior.

This case highlights the ongoing concerns regarding online exploitation and the importance of swift law enforcement action to protect vulnerable individuals from harm, especially in communities like Didcot where such incidents can have a profound impact.
