TALLAGHT MAN CIARAN COLGAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN ENNIS AND CAVAN

In a case that has shocked the community of Tallaght and the wider region, Ciaran Colgan, a 56-year-old man from Gleann na hEorna, Springfield, Tallaght, was sentenced to a total of two years in prison for serious sexual offenses involving minors. The proceedings took place at Ennis Circuit Court, where Judge Gerald Keys delivered the verdict after considering the gravity of the crimes and Colgan’s personal circumstances.

Colgan’s criminal history includes a disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct, beginning with a confession he made to Gardaí in 2010. During that year, he voluntarily approached a Dublin Garda station to admit to sexually abusing a four-year-old girl in County Clare approximately nine years earlier. Colgan disclosed that he had assaulted the young girl on three separate occasions between 2001 and 2003 in West Clare. He identified the victim by name and expressed a reluctance to make a formal statement, stating that he would admit to everything if a complaint was ever filed against him. Despite his admissions, no charges were brought at that time because no formal complaint had been made, allowing him to walk free from the station.

However, Colgan’s offending did not cease there. Four years later, he engaged in a different form of sexual exploitation by creating a fake Facebook profile. Under the guise of a 16-year-old boy, he sent sexually explicit messages to a 12-year-old girl, an act that led to further legal consequences. In March of the same year, Colgan was convicted at Cavan Circuit Court and sentenced to four years in prison, with two and a half years suspended, for the Facebook-related offenses involving the young girl. The court’s decision reflected the seriousness of his actions and the danger posed to minors.

During the sentencing hearing at Ennis, Judge Gerald Keys emphasized the severity of Colgan’s crimes. He stated, “You abused your victim for your own sexual gratification and you abused your position of trust when babysitting.” The judge acknowledged that Colgan had no previous convictions at the time of the offenses, had pleaded guilty, and had voluntarily come forward to admit his misconduct. These factors were considered in his favor. Furthermore, Colgan expressed remorse for his actions and showed willingness to participate in rehabilitation programs, including engaging with the Probation Service and undergoing treatment under the sex offenders’ program.

The case was brought to court after the victim, now an adult, reported the abuse to Gardaí last year. During her interview, she recounted her feelings of shame and confusion, describing how she was used for the sexual gratification of an adult she was supposed to trust. In her victim impact statement, she explained that she sought justice not only to protect other children but also as part of her own healing process. She described her childhood as marked by feelings of disgust, shame, and emotional turmoil, which led to low self-esteem and self-harming behaviors in later years. Her statement highlighted the profound and lasting impact of Colgan’s abuse on her mental health and well-being.

Judge Keys backdated Colgan’s sentence to May 15, the date he entered his guilty plea. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the legal system treats offenses involving the exploitation and abuse of children, especially when committed by individuals in trusted positions.

In a related case from March 2017, Colgan was also sentenced to four years in prison, with two and a half years suspended, for sending indecent Facebook messages to a young girl from Cavan. This case was initiated after a family member of the girl discovered the inappropriate messages, which Colgan believed were exchanged with a 16-year-old boy. Investigations confirmed that Colgan, then residing at John’s Lane Hostel in Dublin 8, had been communicating with the girl, who was only 12 at the time, under false pretenses. He admitted to the Gardaí that he had sent the messages and falsely claimed to be 16 years old. The court heard some of the messages, which included explicit language and attempts to engage the girl in sexual conversations.

Judge Nolan described the offenses as extremely serious, emphasizing that Colgan, being a mature adult, could not be excused or treated lightly. He ordered Colgan to engage with the Probation Service upon his release and mandated that he be registered on the Sex Offenders Register, which the judge noted was “a punishment in itself.” The sentences reflect the judiciary’s firm stance against sexual crimes involving minors and the importance of protecting vulnerable children from predatory behavior.
