EAMONN COOKE'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN CLONDALKIN AND TALLAGHT: PIRATE RADIO DJ SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE
In a harrowing case that has shocked the communities of Clondalkin and Tallaght, Eamonn Cooke, a man once known for his role as the founder of the notorious pirate radio station Radio Dublin, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls nearly 30 years ago.Cooke, aged 70, with residences at Heatherview Avenue in Tallaght and Wheatfields Court in Clondalkin, was found guilty of 42 separate charges of sexual assault during a lengthy trial held at the Central Criminal Court. The trial, which spanned 16 days, revealed disturbing details about the abuse, with victims referring to Cooke as “the Cookie monster” in court.
The presiding judge, Ms. Justice Maureen Clark, addressed the victims, their families, and friends, expressing her understanding of the long and painful ordeal they had endured. She stated, “It has been a long five or six years for all of you and maybe a lifetime for some. I hope today gives you some sense of finality and you never have to appear in court again.”
Following her remarks, Justice Clark sentenced Cooke to 10 years in prison. She also ordered that the prison authorities take into account the 1,300 days Cooke had already served following a previous conviction. The court heard that Cooke had a criminal record that included a 2003 conviction for attempted rape and indecent assault involving four girls, including the two victims in this case. However, that conviction was later quashed due to a legal technicality, leading to his release in May 2006.
Despite his incarceration, Cooke continues to deny all 42 charges of indecent assault, which relate to incidents occurring between January 1974 and May 1978 at an address in Dublin. He has a total of 11 children, ranging in age from four to 18, and maintains his innocence, claiming the allegations are fabricated to tarnish his reputation.
Investigations revealed that Cooke had eight previous convictions, including a four-year suspended sentence for arson against one of the women involved in the 2003 case. During the trial, one of the victims, who had attended court throughout proceedings, shouted at Cooke as the sentence was read, saying, “I hope you rot in hell.”
The victims recounted disturbing details of the abuse. One woman described how the abuse began when she was approximately seven years old and continued until just before her 11th birthday. She testified that Cooke would make them lie naked in his double bed while he lay between them, also naked. She explained that he would face one girl and fondle her, while he made the other girl stroke his back and his anus. After these acts, Cooke would sometimes give her money, sometimes as little as 50p.
Another woman recounted how Cooke took them into his garden, where he filmed them and instructed them to perform the can-can dance. She also shared her fears of lying awake at night, convinced she was pregnant after learning about the facts of life at school. She further stated that Cooke threatened them with being placed in a home if they ever told anyone about the abuse.
This case has brought to light the dark history of a man once associated with the vibrant but controversial pirate radio scene in Dublin, and the community continues to grapple with the revelations of his crimes.
