WHITWORTH MAN CAUGHT IN ONLINE CHILD EXPLOITATION SCHEME GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE
A man identified as Christopher Whitehead, aged 44, residing on Albert Street in Whitworth, was involved in a criminal case where he engaged in online communication with a police decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl.
Over a period of two months, Whitehead sent explicit messages and pictures of himself, including comments like "I am a bit of a perv," and gave the decoy instructions of a sexual nature between September 29 and October 20, 2019, via apps such as Google Hangout.
During court proceedings at Burnley Crown Court, it was revealed that Whitehead had pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
The judge sentenced him to 24 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
The sentence included the requirement to undertake 25 rehabilitation days and 120 hours of unpaid work.
The court also highlighted that Whitehead had previously been of good character, had kept out of trouble for a considerable period, and had a stable job as a fabricator, working extensive hours and stopping cannabis use.
The judge acknowledged the seriousness of the offending but noted Whitehead's potential for rehabilitation.
