CHRISTOPHER O’HARE FROM COUNTY DOWN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG VICTIMS IN BALLYNAHINCH
A resident of Ballynahinch, located in County Down, has been handed a significant prison sentence following his conviction on multiple charges related to sexual misconduct involving two young victims. Christopher O’Hare, aged 70, was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault, which he committed several decades ago. Despite the conviction on these charges, he was acquitted of other allegations, including rape, which he has consistently denied.During the court proceedings, the presiding judge described O’Hare’s actions as ‘disgusting and terrible,’ emphasizing the prolonged nature of the abuse and the profound harm inflicted upon the victims. The judge highlighted the serious impact of the offences, which spanned many years, and condemned the defendant’s conduct as deeply damaging.
In addition to the six-year prison term, O’Hare was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities post-release. Furthermore, he was barred from working with children in any capacity, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
Throughout the trial, O’Hare maintained his innocence, denying all allegations made against him. The court took into account his lack of remorse and the extensive harm caused to his victims when determining the severity of his sentence. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of the justice system to address and penalize sexual offences, especially those committed against minors, regardless of the passage of time.
