MOUNTAIN ASH MAN SENTENCED FOR DOG NEGLECT THAT LED TO EUTHANASIA
Christopher Lee Bufton, born circa 1981, from Fernhill, Mountain Ash, Wales, was convicted in 2025 for severe animal neglect.
He failed to appropriately treat his dog Shiloh’s numerous health conditions, which ultimately led to her being euthanized.
Bufton was found to have neglected her to the extent that her condition was described as dreadful.
The RSPCA investigated after receiving a welfare concern call in September 2024.
Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper attended the address and described Shiloh as "being collapsed and unable to stand with approximately 70 per cent fur loss throughout her body, uncovering thick, pink/red, inflamed skin".
The dog’s eyes had green discharge, and she was suffering from a heavy flea burden along with scabs across her body.
Following examination at the RSPCA veterinary clinic, vets decided to put her to sleep to prevent further suffering.
They reported that "every blink would have been sore for her and her end-stage dry eye would have meant there was no water for her tears." Bufton’s neglect also included failure to manage her skin disease, provide treatment for dry eye, or control a flea infestation.
At court, it was accepted that Bufton acknowledged his inability to properly care for animals.
As a result, he was sentenced to a 24-week imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, with additional penalties including 10 days of rehabilitation, a 12-month mental health treatment requirement, a fine, and a lifetime ban from keeping animals.
The sentence followed extensive investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA, highlighting the cruelty and suffering inflicted on Shiloh.
