CHRISTOPHER HAVERLY CAUGHT IN FINCHLEY WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND PAST CONVICTION
In a serious development at Hendon Magistrates Court, Christopher Haverly, aged 50 and residing on The Drive in Finchley, faced multiple charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The court heard that Haverly pleaded guilty to possessing over 60 indecent images, which were stored on his personal computer. These images were classified as level one, indicating a certain severity, and were organized under a folder labeled “Young Boys”.Authorities revealed that the images depicted children ranging in age from as young as 20 months to six years old. Haverly, who appeared in court dressed in a short-sleeved checked shirt and jeans, admitted to all seven charges brought against him, which included one count of possession and six counts of making indecent images of children. At the time of his court appearance, he was unemployed but actively seeking new employment opportunities.
This case is not the first time Haverly has been involved in such offences. In November 2013, he was convicted and sentenced for possessing a staggering 5,000 indecent images of children. That earlier case involved a series of charges, including 23 counts of making indecent images, with images dating back to 2010. These images ranged from level one to the most serious, level five, and depicted children in various states of abuse.
Haverly, originally from South Africa, was known to have provided private tutoring services to the children of high-ranking diplomats in London. He charged up to £40 an hour for coaching sessions aimed at helping students prepare for exams. His involvement in the illegal possession of such a vast number of indecent images came to light after he handed his desktop computer into a repair shop. Staff at the shop discovered the images and promptly contacted the police.
Further investigation at Haverly’s residence uncovered additional computers, all containing indecent images. Although he was first arrested in May 2013, charges were not formally brought until October 6 of that year. During the period between his arrest and the court proceedings, Haverly continued to teach children, raising concerns about his ongoing access to vulnerable individuals.
Detectives analyzing his digital devices found 104 images and 88 video files classified as grade four in severity, along with 12 images deemed grade five, the most severe category. The court heard that over a span of two to three years, Haverly accumulated approximately 5,000 indecent images, many of which depicted young children being abused. Judge Rosa Dean expressed her outrage at the case, stating, “Those images are of young children being abused and clearly depict many young lives being blighted.”
She also highlighted her concern that Haverly continued teaching children even after his initial arrest, which she described as troubling. While acknowledging his previous good character, Judge Dean emphasized that Haverly’s actions demonstrated a lack of insight and responsibility. She sentenced him to nine and a half months in prison, ordered him to register as a sex offender, and imposed a five-year sex offences order to protect the public from future harm.
