CHRISTOPHER DEVENISH FROM WALLSEND JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN NORTH EAST
In a recent case heard at Newcastle Crown Court, Christopher Devenish, a 55-year-old resident of Coronation Street in Wallsend, was sentenced to nine months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and creating indecent images of minors. The investigation into Devenish’s activities revealed that he was caught accessing depraved pay-per-view websites based in the United States, which led to the discovery of his illicit collection.
Devenish’s digital footprint included the download of 12 videos and approximately 1,500 photographs depicting children engaged in sexual acts or in compromising situations.
The court was informed that his condition, obsessive-compulsive disorder, contributed to his compulsive hoarding of such disturbing material.
Once his interest was piqued, he reportedly continued to accumulate more content, unable to resist the urge, which exacerbated his criminal behavior.
Devenish, who also suffers from diabetes and severe arthritis, admitted to the charges of making and possessing indecent images of boys and girls.
His plea was accepted by the court, which emphasized the severity of his actions.
Judge Beatrice Bolton addressed him directly, stating, “The type of material you downloaded, normal members of the public find absolutely abhorrent.
Unless people like you are prevented from downloading this type of material, abuse will continue.” In addition to his prison sentence, Devenish was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a standard measure aimed at monitoring individuals convicted of such offenses.
Notably, he has no prior criminal record, which was acknowledged during sentencing.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about the proliferation of child exploitation material and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such heinous crimes in the North East region.
