15 MONTHS' JAIL FOR WIFE-BEATER
A wife-beater who punched, kicked and stamped on his spouse in the middle of the night is facing more than a year behind bars for the "savage" attack.Christopher Carley told Samantha Carley she was "going to get what she deserved" before subjecting her to a sustained assault in the kitchen of their Ferndown home.
The 36-year-old snapped after his wife told him she wanted a divorce and threatened to deny him access to his child, a court heard.
The mother of his baby son was left with a bleeding lip, two black eyes and in extreme pain.
She still suffers headaches following her ordeal.
Carley, of Riverside Road, West Moors, pleaded guilty to ABH in February, but magistrates sent him to Bournemouth Crown Court for sentence.
Her husband then stepped on her stomach and walked away, leaving his wife bruised and bleeding on the floor.
Carley later told police he had "lost it", adding that he could have done "a lot worse", said Mr Hall.
In mitigation Frank Abbott said the Carleys' relationship had been "stormy" but he was a man with a "wholly respectable lifestyle" who should be given some hope for the future by avoiding prison.
But Judge John Beashel disagreed.
Sentencing Carley to 15 months in prison he said: "This was a savage and sustained attack...
Your wife said she was terrified and feared for her life.
"You have done this sort of thing before, of course.
"Six years ago you were given a probation order for assaulting your former wife and mother-in-law.
"You seem to take the view that wives are fair game when it comes to violence.
Well, they are not and only a custodial sentence can be justified in this offence." * Spotlight on domestic violence see tomorrow's Echo.
