CHRIS WELLS FROM ROTHWELL SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC COLLECTION OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Rothwell, Northamptonshire, Chris Wells has been sentenced to prison after being found in possession of an appalling library of over 175,000 indecent images of children. The case came to light after Wells, who previously faced legal restrictions, was caught with a vast collection of illicit material that revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior.Wells, a 61-year-old resident formerly living on Cheaney Street in Rothwell, had already been under a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) due to his involvement with illegal images in 2007. This order was further breached in 2014, leading authorities to keep a close watch on his activities. Despite these restrictions, Wells continued to access and accumulate illegal content, which culminated in a significant discovery in May 2020.
In that month, Wells voluntarily handed over a hard drive and a laptop to police authorities. During questioning, he claimed, “There’s probably thousands on here, but I rarely look at them.” This statement was a stark indication of the scale of his illicit collection. Investigations revealed that both devices contained hundreds of thousands of images and videos depicting child exploitation, many sourced from disturbing streaming sites on the dark web. Evidence also indicated that Wells had engaged in sinister live streams with known child abusers, recording these broadcasts onto his devices for personal viewing.
The court heard that among the extensive collection, 2,662 images and videos were classified as ‘Category A,’ the most severe classification denoting the most serious form of child abuse material. The evidence painted a picture of a man deeply involved in the consumption and possibly the distribution of such heinous content.
During the trial at Northampton Crown Court, Wells, who chose to represent himself, admitted to having an “addiction” to the content he viewed. However, he also told the court that he believed he had no intention of offending again, suggesting a level of remorse or at least a desire to distance himself from further criminal activity.
Nevertheless, the presiding judge, His Honour Judge Rupert Mayo, made it clear that the severity of the crimes warranted a custodial sentence. Addressing Wells directly, the judge stated, “I cannot suspend this sentence. You have acknowledged the obvious harm done to these children, and it is harm, that is what they are subjected to. But I have concluded that the custodial threshold has been crossed and it is unavoidable that a custodial sentence has to be imposed.”
Consequently, Wells was sentenced to 22 months in prison for possession of indecent images of children. Additionally, his Sexual Harm Prevention Order was extended for another ten years, ensuring tighter restrictions on his activities moving forward. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from further harm, especially in communities like Rothwell where such heinous crimes have come to light.
