MOTHER AVOIDS JAIL AFTER BRUTAL BOTTLE ATTACK LEAVES MAN SCARRED

A mother-of-five named Charmaine Brown, aged 25, appeared at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court after admitting to a violent assault that left a man permanently disfigured. The incident occurred on August 19 of the previous year and involved Brown hitting her victim, on the head with a broken bottle during an alcohol-fueled argument at an address on Adamson Crescent in Dunfermline. The court was informed that Simpson sustained two deep cuts on the back of his head that required five staples to close, with the wound being 5cm long. The attack resulted in Simpson being permanently scarred, although it would not be highly visible due to his hair. The defense explained that Brown could not recall the exact details of the attack, only the beginning and end, and that she was under the influence of alcohol while taking medication—despite being advised not to drink. Brown has no serious prior criminal history. Sheriff James Williamson ordered Brown to complete 225 hours of unpaid work within 12 months and also imposed a strict 18-month supervision order, warning her that any breach would result in her returning to court and potentially serving time in custody. Originally, Brown was charged with hitting another man with a bottle in the same incident, but her plea to that charge was not guilty and was accepted by the Crown. She was also accused of producing cannabis and possessing a Class B drug at Dunfermline Police Station, but her not guilty pleas to these additional charges were also accepted. This case highlights the severity of the incident but resulted in Brown receiving a community sentence rather than jail time.
