MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS AFTER TWO WOMEN’S REPORTS LEAD TO CONVICTION
Charles Liburd, aged 62 and living on Quarry Road in Maidstone, Kent, was today convicted at Manchester Square Crown Court of 11 charges, including indecent assault and engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 13.He received a sentence of 20 years in prison, with an extra two years on licence.
The conviction followed reports from two women who had the courage to come forward and describe the abuse they suffered from Liburd between 1986 and 1994.
The first victim, who reported the incidents in May 2021, detailed how Liburd sexually assaulted her at her home when she was between 7 and 9 years old.
She described numerous touches and forced sexual acts, as well as the profound, long-term impact on her mental health, which prompted her to report the abuse.
Later, in September 2023, detectives from the Longsight District Investigation Team identified a second victim.
She also stepped forward, revealing she had been raped and subjected to ongoing sexual assaults from ages 7 to 11.
She recounted multiple times trying to push him away during the assaults and recalled one specific incident where she was raped while asleep and awoke to find him on top of her.
The bravery of both women in speaking out led to the issuance of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order against Liburd prior to his trial.
This order was designed to protect current and future victims in Greater Manchester.
Throughout the trial, Liburd exhibited no remorse and denied the allegations, accusing the victims of lying.
However, the jury and police dismissed these claims, leading to his conviction and the imposed sentence.
