CHANTELLE BINNIE FROM SELBY SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO ELDERLY CAT FLUFFY IN YORKSHIRE
Chantelle Binnie, a woman born around 1996 and residing on Newport Avenue in Selby, has been convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to her elderly cat, Fluffy. The heartbreaking case came to light after police found the 15-year-old feline in a severely neglected state at Binnie's home on August 25, 2021.According to court reports, Binnie, who is a mother of two, pleaded guilty to the charge of neglecting her pet, which involved failing to seek veterinary care for Fluffy despite her evident health decline. The cat was discovered collapsed in the back courtyard of Binnie’s residence, prompting immediate police intervention. A police officer transported Fluffy to a nearby veterinary clinic, where her dire condition was confirmed.
Veterinary professionals diagnosed Fluffy with dehydration, breathing difficulties, and signs of advanced liver failure. Her condition was so critical that the veterinarian, Jamie Quek, decided that euthanasia was the most humane option to end her suffering. The vet noted that Fluffy was emaciated, with a body condition score of just one out of nine, indicating severe malnutrition. Her eyes and gums exhibited jaundice, a clear sign of liver issues, and her resting respiratory rate was alarmingly high at 60 breaths per minute, double the normal rate of 30 to 35.
Further examination revealed urine scalding on her rear end, suggesting she had been unable to use a litter tray or that her owner had neglected her hygiene. Her fur was matted with feces, indicating possible diarrhea and ongoing neglect. The veterinary team also identified significant dental disease, adding to her list of health problems. The veterinary expert involved in the case stated that Fluffy had been suffering unnecessarily for at least two months, and her needs had not been met for a minimum of six months. The expert emphasized that a responsible owner would have recognized the signs of weight loss, loss of appetite, or behavioral changes and sought veterinary assistance accordingly.
During the court proceedings, Binnie's solicitor, Andrew Craven, explained that her emotional attachment to Fluffy was profound, as she had inherited the cat from her late grandmother. He argued that Binnie was reluctant to seek veterinary help because she feared the cat might be euthanized, which she saw as a final link to her grandmother. Despite this, the magistrates made it clear that neglecting Fluffy was unacceptable, and her suffering was a direct result of her owner’s failure to act.
Magistrates sentenced Binnie to a 12-month community order, which includes 15 days of rehabilitative activities. She was also ordered to pay £175 in prosecution costs and a £95 statutory surcharge. Additionally, she received a five-year ban from keeping any animals. Inspector Thomas Hutton described the case as a shocking example of prolonged neglect, emphasizing that Fluffy’s condition had deteriorated over a significant period, ultimately leading to her euthanasia.
In addition to Fluffy, two kittens found in Binnie’s care were surrendered to the RSPCA and are expected to be rehomed. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, especially for vulnerable elderly pets who rely heavily on their owners for proper care and attention.
