ST HELENS MAN JAILED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS
The court heard that Carl McConville, a man from Chancery Lane in St Helens, sexually abused four girls during his teenage years.The victims, some as young as eight years old, were lured into his home under the pretense of playing PlayStation and other games, only to be subjected to rape and abuse.
Prosecutor Paul Becker described how McConville, at around 16, repeatedly raped some of the girls.
During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, emotional statements from victims revealed the long-lasting impact of his crimes.
One victim described the past 20 years as a "nightmare," stating: "There are moments in your life which shape your future.
This was mine.
I'm reliving all of the awful things you did to me all those years ago.
You will never truly understand the impact of what you did or the effect you had on my life.
I was just a young, vulnerable little girl, a girl who was violated in the worst possible way..." She expressed her anger and anguish, saying, "I will live with this forever Carl McConville, and for that I will never forgive you." Another victim described how she thought she was just playing a game, but now realizes the horrifying truth: "It's not a game and it's far from normal." Another shared how her life was tarnished for two decades and how her self-image was destroyed.
McConville, who has no prior convictions, was found guilty of 18 sexual offenses.
He was sentenced to nine years in prison, a reduction from 17 years due to his age at the time of the offending.
Judge Katherine Pierpoint emphasized the devastating impact on the victims and the deliberate, repeated nature of his actions, which had a long-lasting effect on each of them.
The court also issued restraining orders banning him from contacting the victims indefinitely and mandated that he register as a sex offender for life.
Defense lawyer Keith Harrison argued that McConville lived an exemplary life for the past 17 years, though this was acknowledged to be a different phase from his teenage years.
