He became paranoid, convinced there was someone hiding in her attic, and in a violent rage, began assaulting her by punching, kicking, and pulling out her hair while she screamed.
He also destroyed her television and prevented her from escaping by seizing her phone and threatening her life, saying, "You're not getting out of this house alive." After she managed to flee, he pursued her, continued hitting her, and pulled her down by her hair till neighbours intervened.
During arrest, Lydiate inflicted injury upon himself by hitting his head against the pavement and a fence.
It was noted that he has multiple prior convictions—five in total for nine offences—including attacks on two other ex-girlfriends.
His attorney stated he blames his behaviour on drink and drugs but expressed remorse and a desire to change.
He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
Judge Andrew Menary KC sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment and imposed a five-year restraining order.
The judge described Lydiate as having a 'worrying side to his personality' and highlighted his past violent record, emphasizing the terror he caused Lucy Price with visible bruising and injuries."
