CAITLIN HAY FROM SHETLAND FACES JUSTICE FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AND THREATS

A 21-year-old woman from Brae, Shetland, has been held accountable for her actions involving threats and offensive messages directed at her former partner. The incident, which took place on December 4 of the previous year, involved Caitlin Hay sending social media messages that included swearing, threats, and images. She admitted to possessing an intimate photo or video of her ex-partner, which she allegedly shared or threatened to share, causing significant distress.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Hay had a prior conviction for similar behavior towards the same individual, indicating a troubling pattern of harassment and domestic abuse. The court heard that her ongoing obsession with her former partner, combined with alcohol consumption and her reliance on her mobile phone, contributed to her inappropriate conduct. Her defense lawyer, Gregor Kelly, described her situation as an unfortunate combination of factors and emphasized her awareness of the need to avoid further contact with the complainant.

In response, Sheriff Cruickshank sentenced Hay to a community payback order, which will be supervised for nine months. Additionally, she was fined £300, along with a £20 victim surcharge. The court also issued a one-year non-harassment order, explicitly prohibiting her from making any contact with the complainant. These measures aim to prevent any future incidents and protect the victim from further harm.
