BRUCE SCHOOLEY FROM LANCING CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BRIGHTON
In a significant case that highlights the long reach of justice, Bruce Ernest Geoffery Schooley, a 62-year-old resident of Lancing, was found guilty of serious sexual offences committed against a young child in Brighton over three decades ago. The trial, held at Lewes Crown Court, revealed disturbing details of Schooley's actions during the 1970s, a period marked by his heinous crimes.During the proceedings, Schooley faced a total of ten charges, which included five counts of raping a child aged between five and twelve years old, along with five counts of indecent assault on a child within the same age range. The evidence presented in court was compelling enough to secure a conviction on all counts, leading to a sentencing that will see Schooley serve 21 years behind bars. Additionally, he has been ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life and has been issued a sexual offences prevention order to restrict his activities and interactions.
The case gained momentum after the victim, who is now an adult, courageously came forward last year to report the abuse. Detective Constable Andrew Beaumont of the Brighton Criminal Investigation Department expressed his support for the victim’s bravery, stating, “The victim came forward to report these offences last year, more than 30 years after they happened, and we worked with them to secure the conviction of Schooley.”
He further emphasized the importance of reporting such crimes, saying, “The victim, who is now an adult, was extremely brave in coming forward, and we were able to offer them support throughout the investigation and during the trial.” Detective Beaumont also reassured the public that no matter how much time has passed, victims of sexual offences should feel encouraged to come forward. “We would assure any victim of any sexual offence to make contact with us, no matter how long ago the offences occurred. You will be treated sensitively and given help and support.”
Authorities encourage anyone with information or concerns to report crimes either at local police stations, through their official website, or by calling 101.
