BRUCE KILGOUR'S HORRIFIC ABUSE IN DERBY: TEACHER SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD CHILD SEX OFFENSES

In August 2016, a disturbing case of historical child abuse came to light involving Bruce Kilgour, a former primary school teacher from Derby.

Kilgour, aged 68 at the time of sentencing, was convicted of multiple counts of indecent assault against three young girls who were between the ages of eight and ten during the 1970s.

The allegations detailed a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years, revealing a deeply troubling breach of trust and abuse of power.

During the trial at Derby Crown Court, prosecutors presented evidence that Kilgour had engaged in a series of inappropriate and sexualized acts towards his young pupils at Gayton Junior School.

The court heard that he had touched a girl’s breasts, flicked the knickers of a girl under the age of 13, slapped female students’ bottoms, and even felt their inner thighs.

These acts were not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of misconduct that included pulling down female students’ tops and shouting “peek-a-boo” in a manner that was clearly intended to intimidate and exploit.

One of the victims, who chose to speak from behind a curtain in court to protect her identity, recounted how Kilgour would call pupils to his desk under the pretense of reviewing their work.

She described how he would then put his hands up her skirt and touch her inner thighs near her underwear.

She also revealed that he would often pull her over his knee and smack her bottom above her underwear on multiple occasions.

The victim described Kilgour as being overly tactile with the girls, often cuddling, hugging, and tickling them, which she now recognizes as inappropriate.

She further explained that on some outdoor PE lessons, Kilgour instructed the girls not to wear tops, telling them to only wear their PE pants, which made them feel uncomfortable and vulnerable.

The victim expressed her fear of him entering the changing rooms, which prompted her and others to change quickly to avoid his presence.

The court was also told that these allegations only surfaced in 2014 when the victim shared a message on Facebook aimed at reconnecting with old school friends and identifying other potential victims.

Prosecutor Mark Watson emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “There was a significant breach of trust in this case, those children were in this defendant’s care, he was their teacher.” Following his conviction, Kilgour was sentenced to ten years in prison.

In addition to his incarceration, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him from living in the same household as anyone under 16, having contact with individuals under 16, or contacting his victims directly or indirectly.

The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of his offenses and the lasting impact on his victims.

One of the victims, in a personal statement read aloud during sentencing, shared her emotional struggles, saying, “I thought I was the problem.

I have four children and I have not had a relationship with a man for 10 years because I think all men are potential paedophiles.

Mr Kilgour frightened me, I used to have nightmares at the time and I used to wake up with the sweats.” Her words underscore the profound psychological harm inflicted by Kilgour’s actions, which continue to affect her decades later.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding children from abuse, especially by those entrusted with their care.
