BRIAN SMYTH FROM LARKHALL JAILED FOR ANIMAL NEGLECT AND CRIMES IN HAMILTON
Brian Smyth, a resident of Mason Street in Larkhall, has been convicted of serious animal neglect and other criminal activities. Smyth, born around 1988, was found to have failed in his duty to care for his dog properly, neglecting its basic needs for food and medical attention during the period from April 1 to June 4, 2019. The dog was discovered to be severely malnourished, with visible injuries to her paws that had not received any treatment, highlighting the extent of the neglect.Initially, there was an allegation that Smyth had walked the dog excessively and had repeatedly dragged her by the collar, causing further injuries to her paws. However, this particular charge was ultimately dropped during the proceedings. Instead, Smyth admitted to the neglect of the animal, as well as to stealing cables from an Asda store. On the day of his arrest, he also shouted abuse and issued threats towards police officers, demonstrating a pattern of aggressive behavior.
In sentencing, Smyth received a jail term of three months. Additionally, he was handed a two-year ban on keeping any dog, a restriction that expired in 2021. The case drew attention not only because of the animal cruelty involved but also due to Smyth’s troubled background. It is understood that he may have moved out of Larkhall in May 2019 and was possibly residing in Burnbank, Hamilton at the time. Smyth is described as a transient individual, frequently moving from place to place.
His criminal record is extensive, with numerous convictions over the years, many of which involve violence against women. Smyth has also struggled with drug and alcohol issues, which have contributed to his ongoing pattern of criminal behavior. His history of incarceration and violent offenses paints a troubling picture of a man with a long-standing pattern of misconduct, now further highlighted by his recent conviction for animal neglect and theft.
