BRIAN COOKE SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SELBY, NORTH YORKSHIRE
A man identified as Brian Cooke has been sentenced to a term of eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to child sexual offences. Cooke, a resident of Selby in North Yorkshire, faced serious allegations involving the sexual abuse of a young girl over a span of ten years. The victim, whose identity remains protected, came forward to report the abuse, revealing that Cooke had assaulted her on numerous occasions between the years 1990 and 2000.According to her account, Cooke would often manipulate her by offering treats and gifts following the abusive acts, and he would also threaten her with silence, instructing her not to disclose what had happened. These repeated assaults left a profound and lasting impact on her life, as she recounted during her statement in court.
The police were alerted to the allegations, leading to Cooke’s arrest. During the initial police interview, Cooke denied all accusations made by the victim. However, subsequent investigations uncovered sufficient evidence to charge him with eight counts of indecent assault on a child aged between six and 16. Cooke, who is now 65 years old, was brought before Gloucester Crown Court to face justice.
On Thursday, February 13, the court sentenced Cooke after he admitted to the sexual offences. His Honour Judge Lowe took into account Cooke’s prior criminal record, which includes seven previous convictions for sexual offences, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior. During the mitigation phase of the sentencing, Cooke expressed remorse for his actions, attributing his misconduct to excessive alcohol consumption at the time of the offences.
The emotional toll of Cooke’s prolonged abuse was vividly conveyed through a statement read aloud in court by the victim. She described her childhood as being irreparably altered, questioning why she was targeted and whether her vulnerability made her an easy target. She recounted her feelings of confusion and shame at the age of just six, and how the trauma has haunted her into adulthood.
She detailed the severe mental health struggles she faced, including depression, alcoholism, nightmares, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her mental health issues nearly led to the breakdown of her marriage, prompting her to seek help and finally come forward with her story. Her courage in speaking out was motivated by a desire for closure and a hope that her testimony might encourage other victims to step forward and be believed.
In her statement, she emphasized that her childhood had been stolen from her and that the memories continue to affect her life. Despite these hardships, she expressed optimism about overcoming her trauma through counseling and support, aspiring to transform her experience from that of a victim to a survivor who can help others in similar situations.
