MAN JAILED FOR 10 AND A HALF YEARS AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY OF THREE COUNTS OF RAPE AND FALSE IMPRISONMENT
Benjamin Wilson, born on 03/08/1990 and residing on Norwood Avenue in Chesterfield, received a prison sentence exceeding ten years after being convicted of offences committed in Manchester city centre in June 2022.Law enforcement officials conducted a delicate and victim-focused investigation after Wilson took advantage of an extremely vulnerable and intoxicated woman.
The victim, who had gone out for an evening with friends in Manchester, became separated from her group and was later subjected to a grave sexual assault, which police suspect was linked to drink spiking.
During that night, the victim and her friend suspected that their drinks had been tampered with.
She subsequently found herself alone, heavily intoxicated, and highly vulnerable.
She encountered Wilson near a takeaway, where he exploited her vulnerable state by taking her into a taxi, eventually assaulting her repeatedly at a flat in Manchester.
The following morning, Wilson dropped her off near the hotel where she was supposed to stay with her friend.
She reported the assault to authorities shortly after the incident.
Because of the trauma she endured and her history of medical PTSD, investigators collaborated closely with her family and a trusted colleague to support the case.
Their efforts focused on identifying, locating, arresting, and charging Wilson.
From the start, detectives faced multiple obstacles, including limited forensic opportunities early in the case, difficulties obtaining CCTV footage, and prioritising the victim’s mental and emotional wellbeing.
The investigative team dedicated hundreds of hours to examining witness statements, analysing financial and phone records, conducting intelligence checks, and overcoming cross-jurisdictional hurdles in order to make an arrest in Derbyshire.
Throughout the process, officers handled the case with sensitivity to prevent further trauma, utilising digital evidence such as phone data and social media to uncover vital links and finally identify the suspect.
