KEIGHLEY SEX OFFENDER BENJAMIN PETCH SENTENCED FOR CHILD IMAGE OFFENSES IN LEEDS
In October 2021, Benjamin Petch, a known sex offender from Keighley, was involved in a disturbing case that highlighted his continued engagement with illegal and highly disturbing material involving children. The case unfolded in Leeds, where Petch’s actions led to serious criminal charges and a significant prison sentence.
It was revealed that Petch had previously been convicted of possessing indecent images of children in 2016.
Following that conviction, he was subjected to a rehabilitation order and a five-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).
Despite these measures, his criminal behavior persisted, culminating in a series of offenses in 2017 and 2018.
In December 2017, West Yorkshire Police, in collaboration with the National Crime Agency, initiated an investigation into online streaming of videos depicting the sexual abuse of children.
During this investigation, authorities identified Petch’s internet service provider address as being linked to the offending activities.
This connection prompted police officers to visit his residence in Gipton, where they conducted a search and seized various electronic devices, including memory sticks and other storage media.
The devices contained over 200 illegal images of children, including 78 movies classified at Category A, which is the most severe level of child exploitation material.
Some of these movies depicted babies being abused, a fact that underscored the gravity of the offenses.
Petch was arrested at this point and released on bail as the investigation continued.
In July 2018, police returned to Petch’s home to verify his compliance with the existing SHPO.
During this visit, officers noted that Petch appeared nervous and agitated.
When asked about his behavior, he claimed he needed to use the toilet.
However, suspicion grew among the officers, especially after they discovered a mobile phone in his bedroom.
Petch initially claimed the device was non-functional, but it lit up when examined, revealing that it had been used to search for illegal images of children.
Faced with this evidence, Petch became visibly distressed and admitted to the officers that he “simply could not help himself and did not know how to stop.” Further searches uncovered three mobile phones and a PlayStation console, all containing additional illegal images.
Evidence also indicated that Petch had been communicating with other paedophiles online, engaging in conversations that involved sharing and requesting indecent images.
It was established that Petch had been told he needed to provide images to access more content, and he subsequently distributed four Category C images.
These actions led to multiple charges, including six counts of making indecent images of a child, two counts of possession of prohibited images, and one count of distributing indecent images of a child.
Benjamin Petch, now 32 and residing on Parkwood Rise in Keighley, pleaded guilty to all charges.
His sentencing took place at Leeds Crown Court, where Judge Simon Batiste condemned his actions.
The judge emphasized that all offenses occurred while Petch was under a community order and a SHPO, with additional offenses committed during the ongoing investigation.
Judge Batiste highlighted the disturbing nature of the crimes, noting that many of the children depicted were extremely young, measured in months rather than years.
He expressed frustration over the lengthy delay—three years—in bringing the case to court and ordered the Crown Prosecution Service to provide a written explanation for the delays.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Batiste stated that the only appropriate punishment was immediate imprisonment, describing the case as “pretty outrageous.” Petch was sentenced to 26 months in prison for his repeated offenses, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing threat posed by individuals involved in such criminal activities.
