BEN SMITH CHARGED WITH RAPE AND COERCIVE CONTROL IN CHESTER
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Chester, Ben Smith, a 28-year-old man from Sydney Road, was convicted of multiple heinous crimes involving two women over a period spanning nearly a year.The incidents, which took place between January and December 2018, revealed a pattern of violent and controlling behavior that culminated in Smith being sentenced to a significant prison term.
Smith was found guilty in Chester Crown Court in April of seven counts of rape, along with two counts of coercive and controlling behavior.
The court heard how Smith would use physical violence and psychological manipulation to dominate his victims, with one of the most alarming tactics being the placement of a pillow over their faces during assaults, effectively suffocating them and preventing their breathing.
The case came to light after two women came forward to report their experiences.
Both women recounted being raped on multiple occasions by Smith, who also exerted a high level of control over their lives.
They described him as manipulative and coercive, isolating them from friends and family, and making them feel as though they had no choice but to remain with him.
One of the victims detailed how Smith’s violent tendencies extended beyond sexual assault.
She explained that he would physically harm her and, during some of the attacks, would cover her face with a pillow to keep her from breathing.
Her account painted a picture of a man who used fear and violence to maintain dominance.
In addition to his prison sentence, Smith was issued restraining orders to protect the two women from further contact.
He is also subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which aims to restrict his behavior and prevent any future offenses.
The court’s decision underscores the severity of his actions and the impact on his victims, highlighting the importance of justice in cases of sexual violence and coercive control.
