COUNTY DURHAM PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED AFTER HORRIFIC INDECENT IMAGES COLLECTION
A County Durham sexual predator has been jailed after he was found to possess a "truly horrific" collection of indecent images of hundreds of child victims.
In February 2024, Barry Williams engaged in online communication with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl and persisted in sending her explicit messages, requests for indecent images, and videos. The 60-year-old was actually speaking to an officer from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) as part of an investigation.
Officers observed Williams attempt to evade arrest by switching platforms and creating new profiles to conceal his identity. When his electronic devices were seized and examined, they contained Category A, B, and C indecent images and videos, described as truly horrific, featuring hundreds of child victims.
In a final effort to avoid prosecution, Williams lawfully tried to change his name to Colin Brown before charges were filed.Despite his efforts, he was unsuccessful.
He faced multiple charges including attempt to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempt to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity, possession of indecent images of children (three counts), possession of prohibited images, and possession of extreme pornographic images.Williams, of Croft Gardens, appeared at Durham Crown Court on July 7, where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
He was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.Detective Constable Adam Abram commented: "Williams made his vile desires very clear and despite his attempts to evade capture and dodge the full consequences by changing his name, the overwhelming evidence gathered by officers secured this sentence and ensured a dangerous predator is off the streets."Under Operation Sentinel, our regional approach to tackling serious and organised crime, we will continue to investigate these online offences to safeguard children and protect the public.
We would urge anyone who has been a victim of this type of offending or has concerns about someone’s behaviour to come forward and talk to police."
