BARRY WEMYSS STALKER FROM FRASERBURGH HARASSES RAF WOMAN AND SENT NUDE IMAGES

In August 2016, a disturbing case of harassment emerged involving Barry Wemyss, a resident of Fraserburgh, who subjected a woman based at RAF Lossiemouth to a relentless campaign of online abuse and threats. The victim, Corinne Ellis, found herself targeted after she rejected Wemyss’s advances on a dating website, leading to a series of increasingly alarming incidents.

Wemyss, aged 33 at the time, initiated contact with Ms. Ellis through the popular dating platform Plenty of Fish. The first message was received on June 1, 2016, and although she chose not to respond, Wemyss persisted. He created multiple fake profiles to continue reaching out to her, demonstrating a clear pattern of obsessive behavior. Despite her efforts to block him after he sent her unwanted messages, Wemyss continued his harassment, escalating his threats and derogatory comments.

According to court records, Ms. Ellis received a private message from Wemyss, which she ignored because she was not interested in engaging with him. However, he did not cease his attempts. On Saturday, July 23, 2016, she received another message from a different profile, only to realize it was from Wemyss himself. In this message, he questioned why she had blocked him and used offensive language, calling her a “stuck up cow” among other obscene terms. Wemyss also made a disturbing remark about her “going with anyone” and expressed a hope that she would be killed while on deployment, a comment that caused her significant distress.

Despite her repeated efforts to block him, Wemyss created a third account and continued to bombard Ms. Ellis with derogatory comments. He claimed to have connections at RAF Lossiemouth and threatened that with a simple message, he could make her life “a living hell.” This alarming behavior prompted Ms. Ellis to contact the police for protection.

Wemyss was eventually traced and detained on July 28, 2016. During police interviews, he admitted to sending the offensive messages, claiming he did not intend for the situation to escalate. His solicitor, David Adam, described Wemyss as a first-time offender who was “more than remorseful” for his actions. He also noted that Wemyss was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incidents and emphasized that the victim did not know his client personally.

At Elgin Sheriff Court, Sheriff Chris Dickson sentenced Wemyss to nine months of police supervision and ordered him to complete 80 hours of unpaid community service. The sheriff highlighted the seriousness of the case, stating, “This was clearly an unpleasant episode, and the complainer would have been rightly very concerned about what you were saying in the messages. She was a complete stranger to you.”

Fast forward to February 2025, Wemyss, now 41, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court to face charges related to a prolonged stalking campaign against the same woman in Fraserburgh. It was revealed that Wemyss had a prior conviction for stalking dating back to 2021. Despite her clear disinterest, Wemyss continued to send her messages, nude images of himself, and chocolates, even after she explicitly told him she was not interested.

The court heard that the initial contact between Wemyss and the woman occurred approximately 18 years ago, with her repeatedly rejecting his advances. Over the years, he intermittently sent messages, including nude images where he attempted to cover his private parts, and even sent her a card and chocolates via Moonpig, which made her feel “sick.”

Prosecutor Rebecca Oakley detailed how Wemyss’s behavior persisted over nearly two decades, with the sending of unwanted messages, images, and gifts, despite her protests. The card from Moonpig contained an apology and a plea for her to contact him, further emphasizing his obsessive behavior.

Wemyss’s defense, represented by Marianne Milligan, argued that the relationship was more of a friendship that had fallen apart, and that Wemyss took out his frustrations on her. She maintained that there was no sexual gratification involved in his sending of images and that he accepted responsibility for his actions.

In sentencing, Sheriff Ian Wallace expressed concern over Wemyss’s repeated offending, noting the particularly troubling nature of his conduct given the sexual content involved. Wemyss was ordered to notify police of any address changes for the next 18 months, and he was sentenced to 180 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he received a social work supervision order and a non-harassment order that will prevent him from contacting the victim for five years. The sheriff warned that breaching these conditions could result in a custodial sentence, underscoring the seriousness of his continued behavior.
