BARRY ROSAMUND CAUGHT IN LOOE: DECADES OF ABUSE REVEALED IN COURT
In a harrowing case that spans over three decades, Barry Rosamund, a man from Looe, Cornwall, has been found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses committed against a young boy in London during the late 20th century. The victim, Guy Beadle, who has chosen to waive his right to anonymity, recounted the traumatic experiences that began when he was just nine years old and continued until he was a teenager.Beadle’s account details how he first encountered Rosamund, who was around 15 at the time, living just a few doors away in London. Rosamund was a friend of Beadle’s older brother, Mark. Growing up in a single-parent household, Beadle described his family’s financial struggles, noting that they often lacked basic necessities and could not afford luxuries. Despite these hardships, Beadle was overjoyed when Rosamund invited him into his home, describing the experience as stepping into “Aladdin’s cave.”
He recalled feeling grateful that Rosamund was willing to include him, and initially, their interactions seemed innocent. However, the relationship took a darker turn when Rosamund invited Beadle over alone, promising to play table football. During this visit, Rosamund engaged in inappropriate behavior, asking Beadle to touch him intimately. Believing it was normal for boys his age, Beadle complied, thinking it was just what boys did, especially after Rosamund gave him three pounds afterward.
Over time, their meetings became more invasive. Beadle described how most of their play took place in Rosamund’s bedroom, where the abuse escalated. Rosamund would force Beadle to touch him, often making him cry, and would even have a calendar of the Kama Sutra, from which he would make Beadle select sexual positions, then violently wrestle him into those poses. When Beadle refused, Rosamund would physically assault him, choking him until he nearly lost consciousness.
The abuse reached a horrifying climax when Rosamund, at the age of 16, attempted to rape Beadle, who was only 10 at the time. Beadle managed to fight him off, an act that marked a turning point in his life. He decided to avoid Rosamund entirely, taking longer routes to school and avoiding his neighborhood to escape the predator. Eventually, Rosamund moved away, and Beadle believed he was finally free from his tormentor.
Despite this, the memories haunted him. Beadle explained how the trauma made him feel shameful and dirty, and how he struggled to move on. He eventually started a family, having twin daughters with a partner, but the past continued to cast a shadow over his happiness. His attempts at rebuilding his life were marred by the unresolved pain of his childhood abuse.
In 2012, Beadle saw Rosamund in the street in Looe, which prompted him to confide in his mother about the abuse. Tragically, just two months later, his mother died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. Beadle expressed his belief that the stress of learning about Rosamund’s crimes may have contributed to her death.
Rosamund, who was 50 years old at the time, was brought before Croydon Crown Court in September 2014. He faced charges including four counts of indecent assault, one of attempted buggery, and one of indecency with a child. Despite pleading not guilty, he was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. Beadle reflected on the sentence, stating, “It’s nothing compared to the 37-year sentence I’ve served,” emphasizing his relief and sense of justice.
Beadle concluded by affirming that reporting Rosamund was the right decision, despite the long-lasting pain it caused him. His story highlights the enduring impact of childhood abuse and the importance of seeking justice, no matter how many years have passed.
