LOOE ELVIS IMITATOR DERREL WEAVER SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AND CHILD ABUSE

In December 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving Derrel Weaver, a 62-year-old Elvis impersonator from Widegates near Looe, Cornwall. Weaver was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences, including the attempted rape of a child, and was subsequently sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 18 years.

Throughout the trial at Truro Crown Court, Weaver's actions and conduct drew significant attention. The court heard that Weaver had engaged in a pattern of predatory behavior, which included filming women secretly and sexually abusing children. His criminal activities involved the use of covert cameras, some disguised as light switches in toilets, to secretly record women without their knowledge.

Jurors deliberated for three hours before reaching a verdict that found Weaver guilty of 19 counts of sexual assault and gross indecency with a child. Additionally, he was convicted of two counts of attempted rape. Prior to the trial, Weaver had already pleaded guilty to eight voyeurism offences, further highlighting his long-standing pattern of sexual misconduct.

Judge Iain Hughes QC addressed Weaver directly during sentencing, describing him as a “dyed in the wool, predatory paedophile.” The judge emphasized the danger Weaver posed, stating, “I am absolutely sure you are and will remain a substantial danger to children physically and psychologically.” He also condemned Weaver’s ingrained and ongoing sexual depravity towards young women and children, underscoring the severity of his crimes.

Throughout the proceedings, Weaver maintained his eccentric persona, wearing aviator-style sunglasses and displaying animated behavior. As he was led away from the courtroom, he shouted threats and curses, vowing to curse everyone present. He declared, “My Grandma is a real witch and I call upon her to curse everyone in this courtroom,” before pointing to a man in the public gallery and adding, “Apart from my friend.” Weaver then appeared to cast a spell on the court, warning, “You think it’s mumbo jumbo but you wait.”

In addition to the convictions related to sexual assault, Weaver was found guilty of attempting to take an indecent photo of a child. However, he was acquitted of two charges of indecent assault and one charge of indecency with a child.

It is important to note that Weaver is not a stranger to the penal system; he is already serving a five-year sentence for firearms offences. His latest convictions and sentencing reflect the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to the safety and well-being of children and the community at large in the Looe area.
