HEROIN ADDICT JAILED FOR RAPING WOMAN WHILE SHE SLEPT
A man involved in heroin use who assaulted a woman while she was unconscious was sentenced to over eight years in prison.Barry Adams, residing on Edward Road in Bedworth, initially denied the allegation of raping the woman until the trial day, when he ultimately admitted to the charge.
The case was heard at Warwick Crown Court, which revealed that in January, Adams, who struggled with addiction and alcohol dependence, was at a friend's residence when a woman in her 20s visited.
The trio spent the afternoon consuming alcohol, during which Adams administered heroin.
The woman later described her condition as being 'well past drunk.' She indicated that Adams was about to leave when she fell asleep on the sofa.
She recounted waking up to feeling pressure on her arms and seeing Adams's face close to hers, prompting her to call the police.
When officers arrived, she told them, 'He’s f***ing raped me.
I woke up and he was on top of me.
My trousers were down round my ankles.
His DNA is in me.
It will prove it.' Adams insisted he had not raped her and claimed the act was consensual, but DNA evidence contradicted his statement.
Consequently, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.
During proceedings, Adams reacted angrily, shouting obscenities at the court and system.
The judge, Andrew Lockhart QC, noted that the woman was heavily intoxicated and had fallen asleep on the sofa, with her next memory being Adams atop her.
The judge emphasized that the sexual act was non-consensual, corroborated by DNA results, and that Adams provided no plausible explanation for the assault.
He was ultimately sentenced to more than eight years in prison, with convictions for sexual assault and rape.
