ISLE OF WIGHT MAN WHO HIT HIS MOTHER SENTENCED FOR 10 OFFENCES
Bailey Smith, a 25-year-old man living on Lowtherville Road in Ventnor, was brought before Isle of Wight magistrates on July 15.He admitted to multiple criminal acts, including three counts of theft from a shop, two counts of assault by beating, four counts of criminal damage, and a racially aggravated public order offence, committed between October 12 of the previous year and June 9 of the current year.
The court proceedings revealed that Smith had a history of violence and aggression, especially when intoxicated, with his own mother describing him as aggressive and violent when drunk.
Prosecutor Giles Fletcher stated that Smith assaulted his mother, who reported incidents of him being aggressive and violent when he was intoxicated.
In December, Smith was in a disturbed mental state, started drinking excessively, and asked his mother for lifts.
The court detailed an incident where Smith, in an agitated state, punched the dashboard of her car and threatened to damage it.
He also assaulted his mother by hitting her shoulder and damaging her vehicle.
In addition to assault, Smith committed thefts totaling £26.45, shoplifting goods like beer, Coke, curry, pizza, ham, and corned beef from the Co-op in Sandown on multiple occasions.
He also caused damage to his mother's property and assaulted another male on June 9.
He previously damaged a door in Ryde in October last year.
Smith's defense highlighted that he had already spent 39 days in custody, equating to a 12-week sentence, and that he struggles with alcohol addiction, which triggers his violent behavior.
The court sentenced him to a 24-month community order, including 30 days of rehabilitation and a 12-month alcohol treatment requirement.
Additionally, he was fined £80 and ordered to pay £160 in compensation.
The court's decision reflects ongoing concerns about Smith's behavior and the impact of alcohol on his conduct.
