ESSEX STUDENT SENTENCED FOR DISTRIBUTION OF INDECENT CHILD IMAGES
A FORMER Essex University student who downloaded and distributed indecent images of children more than ten years ago has been given a suspended prison sentence.Police went to Asil Amin’s room at Rowhedge Court student accommodation in Colchester in 2014 and seized his computer, Ipswich Crown Court heard.
Marc Brown, prosecuting, stated that when the computer was examined it was discovered that Amin had exchanged indecent images of children on online platforms.
Following his arrest in 2014 Amin was interviewed by police and answered no comment to questions.
He was released under investigation and wasn't charged until 2017.
He subsequently received a notice in the post informing him he was required to attend a magistrates’ court hearing.
He didn’t attend the hearing and in 2019 a European arrest warrant was issued; Amin was detained in France pending extradition to the UK, at which point he entered guilty pleas to the charges.
Amin, now aged 31, of Garwood Crescent, Milton Keynes, admitted three offences of making indecent images of children and six offences of distributing indecent images of children.
He was given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for ten years and ordered to pay £500 prosecution costs.
The court heard that Amin was a 20-year-old second-year student at Essex University at the time of the offences.
He had completed his degree after his arrest but was prevented from graduating as a result of the ongoing court proceedings.
The court heard he has been a law abiding citizen since graduating.
